So many things are able to fly in this film that there are times when the air traffic over Joppa, Andromeda's hometown, looks like Kennedy Airport's. There's also a small, gold robot-owl, a prehistoric version of George Lucas's R2D2, who flies around helping Pegasus out of predicaments planned by Thetis. Harryhausen's specialties - assorted monsters Medusa with her coiffure of live snakes Pegasus, the winged horse a two-headed wolf, and a giant vulture, among other things. Though not very witty, the adventures are many and involve a lot of Mr. Behrman comedy, ''Amphitryon 38.'' They wanted, instead, to carry on the fantastic fairy-tale tradition of their earlier collaborations, including ''Jason and the Argonauts'' and ''The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad.''

Schneer and Ray Harryhausen, who's also the special-effects wizard, had no interest in making their movie into a sort of updated version of the classic Jean Giraudoux-S.N. If only ''Clash of the Titans'' stayed on Mount Olympus, it might have been far more entertaining than it is, but its producers, Charles H. ''Why,'' she tells Aphrodite spitefully, ''he once even tried to ravish me, disguised as a cuttlefish.'' ''What did you do?'' says Aphrodite, whose principal purpose on Olympus seems to be to deliver straight lines. Zeus can't stand the idea that anyone else can have a little fun. He also sends Perseus some magic equipment (a helmet, a sword and a shield) to help the boy through mortal life. However, Zeus is more concerned that Perseus, one of his sons by a mortal woman, has been banished, and he decides to destroy the city that banished him. Zeus, ever jealous, has reacted to one of her mortal indiscretions by making her handsome son, Calibos, so monstrously ugly that his marriage to Andromeda has been canceled. Only Thetis (Maggie Smith) is attending to the there and then, and she's seething with fury. Aphrodite (Ursula Andress) looks as if she would prefer to be watching television. The gods and goddesses are hanging around the throne room waiting for Zeus (Laurence Olivier), who wears silver curls and an unreliable expression, to do something arbitrary and mean.
IT is, one gathers, just another day on Mount Olympus.
